The Gathering Place soup kitchen received a generous post-Christmas donation from Freschco grocery store on Trout Lake Road in North Bay.

The local grocery store handed over a cheque recently for $6,000.

The money raised came from both staff and customers during their annual Christmas donation to the local soup kitchen.

“Freshco is a tremendous contributor to our work, not just with donations but as one of the first stores to jump on board our food rescue program," stated Dennis Chippa, executive director of the Gathering Place.

"Those funds will go toward addressing our increasing demand for food as we move through the pandemic.”

Grocery stores have become a key supporter of the local soup kitchen.

Last week, the Gathering Place received more than 3800 pounds of food from seven local grocery stores through the Food Rescue Program.

Chippa says that program allows them to continue to serve 16 meals a week to anyone in need.
