Callander's FunFest and popular fireworks show is cancelled again this year, but hope remains for a possible fall event

Once again, Callander has cancelled its annual FunFest. The fireworks show has been extinguished as well.

Covid-19 is to blame, and although public gathering restrictions are easing, the municipality wants to ensure public safety, and have cancelled the popular attractions.

Callander provides one of the best fireworks displays in the region. Hundreds attend. In 2019 the show was delayed due to high water levels on Lake Nipissing and was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

“We’re going to be watching to see what transpires,” Callander’s Mayor Robb Noon said, adding that perhaps the show will go on this fall or winter.

“If we’re allowed to go, we want to go,” he said. “It’s a great community event, the FunFest is looked forward to every year by everyone.”

This October, a Shriner convention is coming to Callander, and Noon mentioned that weekend may be a good time for the fireworks display.

“We hope to do something, it’s just difficult to plan,” given the uncertainty of the pandemic.

“It’s sad to see it being missed last year, and then cancelled this year, but we look forward to next year,” Noon said.

“It’s quite an event that really gets the whole community together.”
