For the second year running, a group in our community, not an individual, has won the "Newsmaker of the Year" poll.

It fits hand in glove with the "Story of the Year," which was COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdown.

A total of 1,525 votes were cast with the frontline workers taking 465 votes or 31 per cent.

The 2019 winners were the Canadore women (and men) who spoke out against sexual harassment and abuse.

Taking second place this year was concerned citizen Kevin Ferris, a former winner of the poll.

Ferris gathered 262 votes or 17 per cent for his work exposing the CAO scandal at City Hall and for getting the Integrity Commissioner George Valin to look into his complaint into an alleged conflict of interest by Mayor Al McDonald and former Invest North Bay president George Burton into awarding of a $1.2 million to TWG Communications.

In third place is Dennis Chippa for the work he has done at the Gathering Place and with the homeless. Chippa took 127 or 8 per cent of the votes.

Anthony Rota, our MP and Speaker of the House finished fourth with 106 votes or 7 per cent.

Waterskier Jaimee Bull, rounded out the top five. The waterski world record holder garnered 96 votes 6  per cent.
