Freezing rain turns city streets into rinks...literally

Algonquin students prove you don't need a backyard rink to lace 'em up.

That freezing rain yesterday caused havoc on city streets yesterday, but not for the Baker family on Beth Avenue.

"Despite all the freezing rain our kids decided to go for a night skate down our street," said dad Greg.

Carmela, 14 and Charlize Baker, 12, both attend Algonquin High School and thought it would be fun to try the unusual exercise.

Greg says it was about 8:30 p.m. when they decided to give it a try.

"This was their first time doing this. We all saw the ice on the road and their mother suggested they try skating. So they went all the way to their friend's place(about two streets over) and returned to go up and down our street. They said it was not the greatest conditions but it was adventurous."

They might get another opportunity Thursday night as Environment Canada says we might get more freezing rain.

For it to happen, the cold air layer has to be shallow enough so that the rain falling through it doesn't have time to freeze before it reaches the surface. If the cold air layer is deep enough, the rain freezes as it falls to form icepellets (also called sleet) instead, according to weatherquestions.com
