News Release

********************

On the 24th of May during morning hours an elderly female was contacted by a man on the telephone. This man pretended to be calling from her bank and that they were having problems with her account. This woman then provided information on her account and the man then advised her that the only way they could fix this problem was for her to attend her branch and withdraw cash.

He further advised her to lie to any bank employee that would question this large cash withdrawal and state that it was for an emergency.

The senior female then withdrew a total of $4800. from the bank and proceeded to a pre arranged rendez vous point where she was to meet this false bank representative and hand him the money. At the last moment the woman had a change of heart and contacted CrimeStoppers who in turn advised her not to go through with it and call the Police. This was done and the money has been returned to the woman’s account.

The North Bay Police Service would like to caution the general public in any fraud attempt of this nature. Financial institutions will never contact a client in this manner. If in fact there is a problem with an account the institution would request that the client attend to speak face to face with employees.
