Nipissing MPP Monique Smith has announced the opening of a four-lane section of Highway 11, stretching from Trout Creek to South River.

One interchange was built at Goreville Road and one bridge was
also constructed. Most of the section was built at a new
location, but some areas were add-ons to the existing highway.

The widening of Hwy 11 is expected to increase traffic flow, improve
highway safety and economic development in Northeastern Ontario.

“Better transportation links benefit all those who live, work, visit or travel in this part of the province,” Smith said.

“Better highways create jobs and speed up economic activity. They ensure that goods and people are able to move about safely and efficiently, and they foster long-term prosperity.”

The completion date of the four-laning is still unknown.
Over 100 properties between South River and Emsdale must be obtained by the province first. Further engineering is also needed before construction continues.

“The remaining four-laning of Hwy 11 is a top priority, Smith said, when talking about the government’s Northern Ontario Highways Strategy, which will be released this winter.

The strategy is part of the 10-year Strategic Infrastructure Investment Plan, which is a long term strategy to rebuild the provinces roads, highways and bridges.

The total cost of the four-laning project is an estimated $42 million.
