A former Nipissing Lakers goaltender has perished in a two-vehicle collision last week on the 401.
John Chartrand, who had a lengthy OHL career and spent the 2013-14 season with the Nipissing Lakers Varsity Men’s Hockey team was killed when his car collided with the rear end of a transport around 3 a.m. last Friday.
Nipissing Athletics conveyed condolences via Twitter on Tuesday.
"Lakers Athletics would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Chartrand Family on your tragic loss."
Former Lakers teammate Brodie Barron says John was the nicest guy.
“I was honoured to play with him,” Barron said on Chartrand’s online condolence book.
“He would regularly give me rides to practice and sat beside me in the dressing room. He made going to the rink so much better. My condolences to John's family during this tough time. He will be missed dearly.”
Chartrand, was drafted by the then Mississauga IceDogs in 2009 and played for the Barrie Colts and Belleville Bulls before joining the Lakers in 2013-14.
The OPP say the traffic was slowing in the area due to construction and that’s when Chartrand’s car rear-ended the truck and caught fire.
