Former North Bay city councillor, or alderman as it was called then, Eva Wardlaw has died. She was 88.

"The city lost a great friend today," Said Mayor Al McDonald. "Eva Wardlaw served her community in so many ways including serving on Council. I will miss her smile, gentle nature and her positive and can do attitude. She was such a joy to speak with, so knowledgeable. We lost an incredible kind person. We will have a moment of silence at council this evening followed by words from Councillor Maroosis who served with her. We will be lowering the flag at city hall."

There is a park in North Bay named after Wardlaw at the mouth of Parks Creek on Lakeshore Drive. It was dedicated in 1997 to commemorate Eva Wardlaw for her 18 years of service as a member of the Board of Directors of the North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority.

According to the Archives Association of Ontario, " Eva Wardlaw was a North Bay educator, city councillor, and volunteer administrator. Born in 1928 in Athens, Greece as Evanthia Mihelakos, in 1932 she immigrated to Canada with her family, who settled in North Bay. From 1960 to 1986, Wardlaw taught as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal at the Paul Davoud School at Canadian Forces Base North Bay. She also served on North Bay City Council as an alderman/city councillor for nine years."

The flags outside City Hall will fly at half mast until after Wardlaw’s funeral on Thursday, July 28.
