Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health, is urging area residents to get their flu shot due to high levels of influenza activity throughout the area. Influenza A is the main circulating influenza virus, and this year’s flu vaccine is well matched to this strain.

During the past few weeks the Health Unit has seen an increase in reports of influenza, influenza-like illness and outbreaks in our district. The cases being reported are just the tip of the iceberg since not everyone who becomes ill seeks medical attention or gets tested for the flu. If you do become ill, there are things you can do to protect others especially young children, seniors and those with chronic diseases. To prevent the spread of illness:

 wash your hands often with soap and warm water
 cover your coughs and sneezes
 stay home when sick
 and get your flu shot.
Flu shots are available at the health unit, doctors’ offices, and participating pharmacies. To get your flu shot at the Health Unit, call 705-474-1400 ext. 2377
Quote
“Flu season is peaking earlier than previous years. The flu shot remains the most effective way to combat influenza, and it’s a safe way to protect the health of your family.”
