Flood Watch issued for Callander and North Bay Lake Nipissing shorelines

Another 40-70mm of rain is expected over the next three days adding to the already swelling waterbodies in the North Bay-Mattawa Area.

Lake Nipissing in particular is at risk for flooding, prompting the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) to issue a Flood Watch for Lake Nipissing in North Bay and Callander.

“We issue a flood watch when the potential for flooding exists.  Today, Lake Nipissing has risen slightly above the maximum operating level and its storage capacity is limited. With the significant rainfall expected in the next few days and the high winds that could accompany this weather system, the North Bay and Callander shorelines could be impacted by flooding and damage from wave impacts,” said Katelyn Lynch, NBMCA Duty Officer.

Lake Nipissing is currently at 196m.  As the runoff from the storm reaches Lake Nipissing from the watershed, there is a potential risk of the Lake reaching 196.22m by mid to late next week.  This level is classified as the maximum non-damage water level.  Once it rises above that level, the risk of shoreline damage increases.

This potential is subject to change as forecasts and current conditions are available.

NBMCA’s Flood Watch applies to the Lake Nipissing Shoreline in the City of North Bay and the Municipality of Callander. The Flood Outlook issued by NBMCA on April 27 remains in effect for the rest of the North Bay-Mattawa area.
