Five students heading to Fredericton for Canada Wide Science Fair

Three promising projects, involving five students are packing up to attend the 2019 Canada-Wide Science Fair, being held in Fredericton, NB., May 11 through 17.

Since the regional fair, held in mid-April, the students have polished their presentations in preparation for scrutiny by some of the 230 judges in the categories of:

At the national event, numerous medals, scholarships, bursaries and cash awards are available to successful competitors. The total award value is expected to be in excess of $500,000.

The three local projects are:

Emily Mah and Jazlyn McGuinty of Widdifield Secondary School for their project “Using Tannin-Embedded Biopolymers to Extract Heavy Metals from Contaminated Water” which won the TransCanada Award, the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council Award - Intermediate or Senior, the Dr. J.M. Filion Environment Award, and a gold medal in the Senior Earth and Environment category;

Skye White and Ian McCormack of West Ferris for their project “Looking for Micro-plastic in Water with Nile Red” which won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority Science Award, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Earth and Environment  category;

Hanna McDonald of St. Luke’s for her project “Bite Me” which won the Shulman Travel Award, and a gold medal in the Junior Life Science category.

North Bay Regional Science Fair Chair, David Jackowski, said, “We had so much incredible talent at the NBRSF this year. I'm very proud of the team of five students chosen to represent our region."
