North Bay has its first Low Carb Clinic located at 320 Airport Road.

Robinsong Health Low Carb Clinic held its grand opening June 20.

The clinic is owned and operated by Erin Pitkethly, a pharmacist who specializes in the management of medical conditions and weight loss with a low carb approach according to a news release.

Pitkethly trained with family physician Dr. Evelyne Bordua-Roy in Quebec in order to become the first pharmacist in Canada with low carb training.

"Low carb medicine is a new and highly effective method of reversing type 2 diabetes through nutrition and careful medication management," explains Pitkethly. "It can also be used for weight loss, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other medical conditions. As the first low carb clinic in Northern Ontario, Robinsong Health’s goal is to empower patients to improve their health while addressing the high rates of type 2 diabetes in the north."

In Ontario, 30 per cent of people have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, with the rates being up to 20 per cent higher in Northern Ontario.

Complications from type 2 diabetes include blindness, amputation, and kidney failure. Current standard treatment does not try to reverse diabetes but rather only slows the progression of this debilitating disease.
