North Bay Firefighters responded quickly to help contain a kitchen fire which was reported around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night in a residence on Sylvan Crescent in North Bay.

Greg Saunders, deputy fire chief, says four people were at the home when the fire broke out. He says they evacuated the home and called 9-1-1.

"When firefighters entered the residence they found a pot of oil on the stove that was on fire," said Saunders.

"The fire was extinguished with a dry-chemical extinguisher and the pot removed from the residence. The residence was ventilated to remove the harmful products of combustion.  This fire was eerily close to extending into the rest of the home and causing significantly more damage as there was significant heat and smoke on arrival."

The North Bay Fire Department reminds the public that cooking with grease or oil can be very dangerous.

"Never leave the kitchen unattended when cooking with oil," added Saunders.

"If possible please use an appliance that is meant to be used when cooking with oil. These appliances have an automatic shut-off feature that turns the appliance off when the oil gets too hot thus preventing the chances of a fire."

Saunders suggests that if you do have a fire, shut off the element and put a lid on the pot if you can do so safely.

"Make sure that everyone in the home evacuates the residence and call 9-1-1 as soon as possible," he added.

Saunders noted that you should never try to use water to extinguish a grease fire.  See this VIDEO. as to why.
