North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded to a structure fire at the old North Bay Power Plant formerly operated by Atlantic Power on Hwy 11 North of the city before 5 p.m. yesterday afternoon.

The Atlantic Power facility was an electrical generation station that is not currently in operation.

"Upon arrival fire crews located a fire in the walls and roof systems of a generator room," stated Greg Saunders, deputy fire chief in a release.

"Firefighters were able to forcibly open the walls and roof and extinguish the fire that had traveled in many directions behind siding and the roof membrane."

Saunders says the cause of the fire appears to be the conduction of heat from an exhaust chimney to the roof structure and insulation.

Fire crews were on scene for about 4 hours. Damage is estimated at $75,000.00
