Expectations were exceeded with a total of 3,229 pounds of food and $4,083 collected Wednesday at the annual ‘Fill a Fire Truck with Food’ fundraiser at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer.

Fire Prevention Officer Chris Nichol said, “The generosity of our community is tremendous and North Bay Fire & Emergency Services looks forward each year to this annual event to help such a worthwhile cause while promoting Fire Prevention Week.”

This year’s theme, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” encourages North Bay to “GET LOUD” and test their smoke and CO alarms. By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey, and outside all sleeping areas however, too often fatal fires in Ontario occur in homes where there were no working smoke alarms.

Nichol added praise for Parker’s Your Independent Grocer for their continued support and the volunteers at the North Bay Food Bank for the "tireless service they provide."

Last year's expectations were exceeded with a total of 2,070 pounds of food and $3,215 collected. The theme of “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen” tied in with the Food Bank as the fire department reminded everyone to stay alert when cooking, as kitchen fires continue to be the leading cause of house fires.
