Miles Peters passed away at Serenity Hospice.

A man known for his passion for North Bay, Miles Peters passed away Sunday at Serenity Hospice, according to his daughter Sarah. He was 75.

"My dad passed away peacefully at Serenity Hospice in North Bay yesterday morning on December 4th with my brother and I by his side," she wrote to his friends on Facebook.

"He was such a fighter through all his illness and right to the very end. I have not witnessed a heart and a will so strong. I am so grateful to God that I was able to be by his side the last few weeks and to spend his last days and hours with him.

"I know he has imparted his strength on to myself and my siblings to get through these hard times of life. This is the hardest thing I’ve had to walk through in my life," she wrote.

"The pain of knowing I won’t be able to see him or hug him again, at least on this side of heaven anyways, just hurts my heart more than anything. I miss him so much already!! I know he will also be greatly missed by those of you who knew him and loved him. Thank you all for being a part of my dad's life and for all your love, prayers, and condolences!"

Peters spent his career as an independent entrepreneur building multiple corporations within the mining, forestry, railway, defence, telecommunications, and pipeline industries. He was a passionate leader, and outspoken activist and was continuously honoured to serve his community.

Peters was known as a citizen willing to take the heat of putting local politicians' feet to the fire as president of the North Bay Taxpayers Association and made a spirited but unsuccessful run for a city council seat four years ago.

Prior to his run, for five years, he attended virtually every city council meeting and many committee and budget meetings to listen and evaluate the processes and decisions made on the citizen’s behalf.

He led the effort to retain the historic Dionne Homestead and artifacts when the City was willing to abandon them. He engaged and spoke on behalf of the surviving Quints and was a director of The Dionne Quints Heritage Board Inc.

His stated goal was "to restore the public faith and confidence" in running the city.

A Service will be held Sunday, December 11 from 1:30-5 p.m. at Martyn Funeral Home.
