North Bay City Council saw to an enhancement of the emergency response system in the city this week.

A network of 26 controlled intersections that allow street lights to be controlled by emergency vehicles with infrared technology has been improved upon.

Council, now looking to install the enhanced GPS based intelligent traffic lights, put forward the pieces to secure funding to see the remaining 26 intersections without the technology upgraded.

“Infrared sounds really cool, but it's actually outdated,” says Councillor Tanya Vrebosch.

The addition of all the city intersections into a system to enhance traffic safety and emergency response times is seen as a great step forward for the people of North Bay in terms of safety and efficiency in the times when medical, fire and police services are needed with haste to serve the citizens.

The project is expected to cost several hundred thousand dollars.
