The Student Nutrition Program is hosting a walkathon to help ensure students in our community attend school well-nourished and ready to learn. This walkathon, entitled “Feeding Our Students One Step At a Time”, will take place on Sunday October 14, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Lee Park in North Bay. This event will feature a 1.5km walk, face painting, flag making, temporary tattoo parlour, community partner displays, entertainment, prizes, and will be emceed by North Bay’s 100.5 EZ Rock’s Kevin and Carly! The walkathon will go ahead rain or shine.

The Student Nutrition Program is sponsored by Community Living North Bay and receives funding from the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) to support schools that have a breakfast, morning meal or snack program. The funding received from the MCYS only covers up to 15% of the program costs. The meals and snacks served in a school nutrition program must follow strict nutrition guidelines and are available to all children that attend the school. We believe that the universality of the program reduces any stigma that may be associated with attending the program.

When children attend school well nourished, student’s grades increase, graduation rates increase, absenteeism decreases, incidences of bullying decrease and the student’s overall health is better due to the additional quality nutritional items eaten at a nutrition program.
