Winter driving will become a little less expensive if you use winter tires.

That’s if the Ontario PC’s win the spring provincial election.

Today Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli made his first campaign announcement at Gold Fleet Subaru in North Bay by offering a $500 winter tire tax credit to Ontarians.

“This is change that works for drivers, and change that will work for the North,” said Fedeli.

“This is my first campaign announcement today and I think it is a very important one to speak about in Northern Ontario.  A $500 tax credit is going to be the incentive to get families to purchase winter tires and make it a far safer place for themselves and for others on the road.”

Fedeli was joined by officials at Gold Fleet Subaru along with Frank Notte, who is the Trillium Auto Dealers Association Government Relations Director.

“First it is about safety, anybody can tell you if you have a winter tire absolutely it is the best thing you can do to ensure safety in the winter and number two, for those people who already purchased those tires a $500 winter tire tax credit will lessen the cost of vehicle ownership which depending on the size of the tire and what brand, it will cut that cost in half,” said Notte.

“We don’t endorse political parties but we definitely endorse policies that will lessen the burden of vehicle ownership and promote that value as well.”

Fedeli noted a vehicle with proper winter tires can stop 25 percent faster on snow and ice than a vehicle without winter tires, making it a desirable investment for drivers.

In addition, the province recently created a mandatory insurance rate discount for drivers who purchase winter tires.

“A $500 tax credit increases the incentive to purchase winter tires, and would encourage safer driving practices at a lower cost, while saving every Ontario driver money on their car insurance,” said Fedeli.
