Jordan Pearce is only five, but he spent New Year's Eve mixing it up on the ice with the big boys.

Jordan, his dad Gary and some other youngsters played a little outdoor ball hockey with members of the North Bay Trappers Wednesday evening as part of the Families First New Year's Eve Celebrations.

"What I save I made," Jordan said, after sprawling in front of the net, his first baseman's glove grabbing the ball.

He then showed his versatility by running down to the other end of the ice patch to score a backhand goal.

Families First gives North Bay residents the chance to celebrate the New Year together in an alcohol and drug free environment.

It was held between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. in three different locations: the YMCA, Memorial Gardens and Thomson Park.

Much of the action was concentrated at the Gardens, where families were able to take a leisurely skate around the rink.

Mayor Vic Fedeli was among them.

"This is the first time in 10 years I've been on skates," Fedeli laughed.

"He skates like Jerry Lewis," Fedeli's wife Patty added.

Family swims and volleyball were held at the Y.

Fireworks at Thomson Park ended the festivities, a multitude of colours lighting up the black night sky and sending people home with a bang.
