Fall tour: capturing colours by canoe

Friends of La Vase Portages is introducing their Inaugural Fall Tour this year on October 1st, 2016. This is an opportunity to see the picturesque landscapes and some rather historical landmarks within our community. The route is mostly traversable by canoe, but the portaging sections give visitors insight as to what the voyageurs, trappers, and first nations used to travel through centuries ago. The group hopes that this will be an annual favourite to accompany their annual Canoe Day (which takes place in July). One key difference from the annual Canoe Day, is that this will be a round-trip excursion of the most pristine part of the portage to Coopers Lake and back.

Darren Patey, Chair-elect of the Friends of La Vase Portages had stated, “We're so fortunate to enjoy such incredible and vibrant colours with the crisp air of the Fall season on La Vase Portages and typically the cooler temperatures coax the wildlife out of hiding for some spectacular sightings. All the photographers and paddlers in the region are going to want to go on this trip.”

Friends of La Vase Portages will be providing a small trail lunch and their Guides will point out some natural and historic features along the route. The event costs $20 per participant and it is asked that you register by Wednesday, September 28th.

La Vase Portages is a 14 kilometer section of the historic Voyageur canoe route that crosses the height of land between the Mattawa and French Rivers. The Friends of La Vase Portages’ goal is to have its historic and heritage importance recognized and protected for future generations.
