Hundreds of students from the area flocked to Explore the Trades in Nipissing Wednesday, which was put on by the Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound Local Training and Adjustment Board, and held at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre.
Hundreds of students from the area flocked to Explore the Trades in Nipissing Wednesday, which was put on by the Muskoka, Nipissing, Parry Sound Local Training and Adjustment Board, and held at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre.

It was organized through a partnership of local education, business and service organizations, with funding support by the local Human Resources Development Centre.
The one-day event was aimed at providing information about the skilled trades and the processes for launching a career as a skilled tradesperson.

Explore the Trades in Nipissing comes on the heels of studies which state there is and will be a future need for skilled tradespersons in a variety of professions and occupations. It targeted the general public, unemployed youth and secondary school students and their parents.

Participants were able to meet with tradespeople, and representatives from trade unions, the military, fire and police services and training providers to learn more about the opportunities in the trades.

The exhibits, set up by over 25 employers, included interactive opportunities and specialized demonstrations throughout the day.

It also highlighted career opportunities in IT, service industries and non-traditional occupations, as well as mining, traditional trades, transportation, forestry, healthcare, technology, and hospitality.
