Like many other activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, Valentine's Day celebrations will look a little different for students in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit coverage area.

As Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday this year, parents and guardians can expect reminders ahead of February 12, the Friday before, warning students will not be permitted to bring in any valentines from home.

"We are treating Valentine’s Day as we did Halloween by recommending that it is not permitted at this time to exchange cards or treats," the Health Unit confirms with BayToday.

In an attempt to limit gatherings, Dr. Jim Chirico, the district's Medical Officer of Health has faced some difficult decisions with regards to prohibiting some staple winter outdoor activities while the province is under a state of emergency and stay-at-home order.

Small Valentine's Day celebrations following health and safety protocols may still take place in the classroom but families are asked not to send any items in for this occasion.

The Health Unit clarifies, "If schools choose to add in some extra activities to celebrate the day we are reminding them to ensure they follow COVID-19 protocols when doing so."
