A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Greater Sudbury and vicinity and for the North Bay - New Liskeard - Temagami areas, says an Environment Canada weather alert issued at about 6:30 on Friday.

"A cluster of thunderstorms over Lake Superior will move eastward through or toward portions of the regions this evening," says the alert. "Some of these storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, large hail, torrential downpours and frequent lightning."

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
