Discovery North Bay Museum is excited to announce that The Royal Ontario Museum’s “Egypt: Gift of the Nile” is on from now until August 10th at Discovery North Bay Museum.

The exhibit invites visitors to explore an ancient civilization that flourished for thousands of years. The Nile River Valley of 5,000 years ago was the birthplace of a remarkable civilization. Protected from foreign invasion by vast deserts and sustained by fertile soil along the river, the ancient Egyptians developed from a simple agricultural community into a sophisticated society. Under a system of divine kingship, this Egyptian civilization lasted thousands of years and contributed strongly to the later cultures of the Mediterranean and Europe.

The exhibit includes 68 authentic Egyptian artifacts including jewelry, carvings, writing implements, fabric and more. It also includes a full sized replica sarcophagus.  Museum staff have also set up activity centres for decoding hieroglyphics and creating Egyptian style jewelry out of common household materials.  School and community groups are invited to book tours and/or interactive exhibit based programming.

“This is a rare opportunity to view ancient Egyptian artifacts right here in North Bay. Such materials are rarely available to travel, and we are very excited to have them here.”

This exhibition was organized and circulated by the Royal Ontario Museum through its Exhibits and Community Programs Department. The Royal Ontario Museum is an agency of the Government of Ontario.
