EASTER TREASURE HUNT ON THE TRAILS

Discovery Routes Trails is partnering with Take Heart and the Canadian Ecology Centre to encourage everyone to “Get out to the trails and take a hike!” during two Easter weekend treasure hunts on Saturday, March 26. Treasure hunts for both children and adults will take place from 10 am to 1 pm along the Discovery Routes trails. Clues and information can be picked up starting at 9 am at Lefebvre’s Outdoor Sports, 122 Main St. W. Participants must pre-register by contacting Greg Jamieson at 474-5420, ext. 2010.

The children’s treasure hunt will be featured along the Kate Pace Way, one of North Bay’s premier multi-use trails. After registering at Lefebvre’s, participants will go to the trail and follow their list of clues until they find all the items. Then they can return to Lefebvre’s to pick up their prize.

The adults’ treasure hunt is developed through a partnership with the Northern Ontario GPS Treasure Hunting (NOGPSTH) and the Canadian Ecology Centre. Easter treasure caches will be located throughout the Ontario’s Near North/Blue Sky Region. Lessons on using GPS will take place at Lefebvre’s starting at 9 am and 10 am and GPS units will be available. Participants will have an opportunity to win prizes for finding the hidden caches across the region, and prizes will also be awarded locally in a draw on April 13.

Jill Faulkner, community health promoter, said, “One of our goals is to help people make active living part of every day. The treasure hunts provide a great opportunity to encourage people to

do that. Walking the trails is an inexpensive but easy way to become more physically active. It’s also an excellent way to be a role model for your children so that they can learn the benefits of an active lifestyle.”

There are other opportunities to get active throughout the year by looking for other geo-caches to have additional chances to win thousands of dollars worth of prizes. More information about the GPS treasure hunt can be found at www.geocachingontario.com.

Take Heart is a local partnership of citizens, community groups and health agencies working together to build heart healthy communities by making healthy eating easy, smoke-free the way to be, and active living part of every day.
