Driver with a six year old passenger charged with impaired

North Bay OPP received a traffic complaint this past Sunday about a vehicle towing a utility trailer, which was swerving all over the road and travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 11.

The vehicle was southbound heading towards North Bay on October 18 at approximately 5 p.m.

Officers found the vehicle at a gas station in North Bay and after speaking with the driver, conducted a roadside screening test which resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested and brought to the North Bay OPP for additional tests.

Police say there was a six-year-old child located in the cargo area of the vehicle.

A 42-year-old man from Adjala-Tosorontio Township, near Barrie, is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 Plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Draw trailer with no plate

The driver was released on an appearance notice.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver's licence was suspended for 90-days.

The name of the driver was not released to protect the privacy of the child.

Drivers toss beer bottles

Meanwhile on October 21 at 1 a.m., North Bay OPP received a report of two vehicles driving on Highway 63 in North Bay, tossing beer cans out the window.

Officers stopped both vehicles. Roadside screening tests were conducted on both drivers who both failed and so were arrested at the scene and brought to North Bay OPP for further testing.

Tristan Melcalfe, a 24-year-old male from of Bonfield, is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 Plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Fail to have an insurance card
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor

Michelle Villeneuve, 26, of North Bay, is charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 Plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

Both were released on an appearance notice with a court date of December 22.

The vehicles were impounded for seven-days and the drivers' licences were suspended for 90-days.

And on October 17, at 1 a.m., North Bay OPP were patrolling on Sand Dam Road in Merrick Township, just north of the city.

Officers stopped a vehicle and detected a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage on the driver. The driver registered a fail on the roadside screening device.

Matthew Lachowski, 26, of North Bay, is charged with "Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 Plus).

He was released on an appearance notice with a court date of December 1. 

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver's licence was suspended for 90-days.

These incidents mark 45 drivers charged under the criminal impaired driving laws in the North Bay OPP Detachment area in the year 2020.
