Good weather helped to make the North Bay Dragon Boat Festival a success.

Although fewer teams participated in the 5th annual Dragon Boat Festival, coordinator Marg Moody said she was pleased with how the event turned out.

“I think it is going well, the sun is shining, and it is a great day. A free family fun day with great races,” Moody said.

"We had a lovely opening ceremony with Dennis Mong awakening the dragon and when it’s all over Dennis will put the dragon to sleep again till next year.”

Funds raised this year will go to three projects in the area, Moody said. The new North Bay Regional Health Centre will receive the monies raised through pledges, while the Warriors of Hope and the North Bay Canoe Club split the day’s proceeds.

Moody did point out the true aim of the festival is to promote the issue of breast cancer.

“We have three breast cancer survivor teams this year and they are here to prove that there is life after cancer,” Moody said, “and the teams like to go to the different venues to share the message.”

While numbers are down, Moody is happy that the North Bay festival has not faced the issue of cancelling like its counterparts in Timmins.

“No, we have never had to cancel. We are down this year in number of participants, but no we did not think of cancelling,” Moody said.

“Like anything else you have to keep changing and add something new. Next year it is possible that we will have an organizer for the teams to help take the pressure off.”
