Early this morning in a Sudbury hospital, veteran gospel radio host Dr. Bert Brandon lost his battle with Brain Cancer.

Brandon, who was a local Chiropractor, held many positions within the College of Chiropractors of Ontario the governing body of that profession, but gained notoriety when he ran for the Nipissing Liberal Party provincially in 1995. Brandon’s bid was short lived, as that was the election that saw the ‘Common Sense Revolution’ sweep across Ontario and put Nipissing riding incumbent, Mike Harris, into the Premier’s seat at Queens Park.

Brandon hosted the Sunday Gospel Show for well over 20 years, and earlier this year in the company of friends and colleagues, he celebrated a milestone, his 1,000 show.
Known as ‘The Doctor of Country’, Brandon was known as a generous man who looked out for the little guy, and will be missed by all the listeners he has touched and helped over these many years.

“The news of his loss has taken everyone at the station by surprise,” said Rogers Radio Station Manager, Peter McKeown.

“He had just paid a visit to the station this past Tuesday.”

A special tribute for Brandon will be held in his regular timeslot this Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. hosted by longtime workmate Dean Belanger with guest visitors and longtime friends former Nipissing MP Bob Wood and radio host Barbra Dawn.

“And that is how Bert would have wanted it,” said McKeown.

The planned fundraisers organized by friends was originally put together to help with Brandon’s medical costs, will still go ahead Sunday August 21, 2005 at the Best Western and Sunday September 18, 2005 at the Voyageur Hotel, where the proceeds will go to people in need.

Arrangements for Brandon’s funeral are incomplete at this time.
