Give something more than chocolate and jelly beans this Easter. Treatment for patients doesn’t stop over the long weekend, and having blood donors come in before and after the holiday is critical to ensuring patients have the blood they need.

Canadian Blood Services is asking eligible donors to come in and donate blood after the Easter long weekend to help patients in our hospitals. That’s a time when blood donations typically decrease as a result of our regular donors being away or busy with other activities. But for patients, the need for blood doesn’t take a break.

“Working with hospitals and physicians to help patients get the blood they need is part of what I do each day. As a result, I know how much patients in our hospitals depend on Canadian Blood Services and the generosity of blood donors. Because our blood donors understand that the need for blood is constant, throughout much of the year we are blessed with enough blood for patient needs,” says Dr. Robert Skeate, Ontario medical director for Canadian Blood Services.

“During holidays, however, we do sometimes have difficulty bringing people into our clinics. The number one reason people offer when asked why they don’t donate blood is, ‘No one ever asked me to.’ So now, I am asking. On behalf of patients in our hospitals, I am asking that residents consider taking an hour out of their day to come in and donate blood. It really is lifesaving.”
