Dog found shot after house fire

Police are searching for a "suspicious man" after a dead dog was discovered after a house fire.

The fire was called in on August 6 at 6:25 a.m., at Park Drive in Markstay-Warren, west of Sturgeon Falls.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. 

"Once the fire was extinguished, a dog was found deceased within the residence. Investigation revealed the dog had been shot," said Constable Michelle Coulombe in a release.  

"A suspicious male was seen leaving the scene in a late model pick-up truck. The vehicle headed towards Highway 17."

The male is described as:

  • approximately 6 feet tall,
  • thin build,
  • dark complexion,
  • wearing a ball cap and grey hoodie.  

While the investigation is still in the preliminary stages, police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no concern for public safety.  

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing by members of the Nipissing West OPP Crime Unit, OPP Forensic Identification Services in partnership with members from the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management.
