Dealers charged after two overdose deaths in Chapleau

'Both deaths are suspected to be due to opiate overdoses'

OPP have charged two people with drug trafficking after two overdose deaths in Chapleau, northwest of Sudbury.

On January 30, at 6:30 a.m., OPP responded to a residence where a 35-year-old person was found unresponsive and was later pronounced dead. 

On February 2, at 5:15 p.m., officers performed a well-being check on a 55-year-old person and found them deceased inside their residence. 

"Both deaths are suspected to be due to opiate overdoses," said Constable Trevor Tremblay in a news release.

Then on February 4, OPP Northeast Region Community Street Crime Unit officers and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service executed two Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrants at two residences on Brunswick House First Nation near Chapleau.

"A search of both residences yielded quantities of suspected opiates, amphetamines, and other evidence of drug trafficking," added Tremblay.

 As a result of the investigation, two people were arrested and charged

April Tangie, 29, from Brunswick House First Nation, is charged with:

  • Traffick in schedule I substance
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - opioid

Kelly Bernier, 38, from Brunswick House First Nation, is charged with:

  • Traffick in schedule I substance - opioid
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - opioid

Both have been released and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on April 19, in Chapleau.
