Cyclist dies. Criminal negligence charges laid

A 70 year old woman, hit by a car while cycling along Highway 124 near Magnetawan Sunday died in hospital Monday.

June Bell of Barrie was struck and thrown into a ditch while the motorist fled. The vehicle was travelling eastbound on Highway 124 when it struck the eastbound cyclist.

A Barrie man who was arrested an hour later in Parry Sound now faces much more serious charges.  

"At approximately 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, police located the vehicle and driver in Parry Sound," according to  Constable Louise Maki."

OPP arrested Darren Miller, 54, of Barrie,. He has been charged with the following upgraded offences:

  • Dangerous Operation Causing Death, 
  • Causing Death by Criminal Negligence, and
  • Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident Causing Death,

Miller was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, July 26, in Sundridge.
