Current forest fire situation for the Northeast Region

The Northeast Region has seen a busy day with 13 new fires thus far. Algonquin Park, Chapleau, Kirkland Lake, Midhurst, North Bay, Sudbury and Timmins have each received 1 fire, while Cochrane has had 2 and Wawa has seen 4. The largest fire found thus far today is Kirkland Lake 8, currently at 1500 hectares.

Suppression efforts also continue on existing fires in the region. There are currently 34 actives fires in the region, burning a total of 6568.9 hectares. The following is an update on the larger fires in the area.

New Fires:
Timmins 9 is currently 1000 has in size and is north of Gogama. Crews on the fire are currently working on values protection of values in the area. The fire is currently listed as Not Under Control.

Kirkland Lake 8 is currently 1500 hectares in size. This fire has thus far caused the evacuation of Kirkland Lake Gold. It has also caused the municipality and OPP to evacuate some outlying areas as well. Four tankers are currently on site working on this fire. This fire is currently listed as Not Under Contol.

Existing Fires:
Wawa 4 is currently 3000 has in size. An incident management team is on site working with resources. FireRanger crews continued with suppression efforts today, and an infrare ground scan is going to possibly be done tomorrow morning. The fire is currently listed as Not Under Control.

Wawa 5 currently 50 has in size. Crews have been making good progress on the fire. The fire is currently listed as Being Held.

Timmins 5 is currently 8 has in size. The fire was scanned by an infrared unit on ground for hot spots, and found no new hot spots. Crews have been making good progress on this fire, and it is currently listed as Under Control.

Timmins 7 is currently 476.5 has in size. An Incident Management Team is on site as well as crews. Infrared scan was done on the fire yesterday, and some hot spots were found. The fire is currently listed as Being Held.

Kirkland Lake 5 is currently 27 has in size. The fire was scanned by an infrared unit on ground to search for hot spots yesterday and a few were found. Crews continue suppression efforts on this fire, and it is currently Under Control.

Chapleau 8 is currently 195 has in size. Crews continue suppression efforts on this fire, and it is listed as Not Under Control.

North Bay 8 is currently 32 has in size. Crews continue clean up on this fire, and it is currently listed as Under Control.

To date, there have been 141 fires in the Northeast Region, having burnt 6842.2 has.


FIRE HAZARD - A Restricted Fire Zone is currently in effect for the Northeast Fire Region, north of the French River including French River Provincial Park. The restricted fire zone includes the MNR districts of Sudbury, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Hearst, Chapleau, Wawa, Cochrane and Manitoulin Island. No open burning, including campfires is permitted within the boundaries of a restricted fire zone. Portable heaters or propane stoves may be used for cooking and warmth but must be handled with extreme caution. All burning permits are suspended.
