COVID and its resulting lockdown is the local "Story of the Year"

Understandably, COVID-19 dominated the headlines this year and BayToday readers have, by a wide margin, voted it as the 2020 "Story of the Year."

While, by provincial comparables Nipissing-Parry Sound is on the low end of the scale, the lockdown closed businesses, cost jobs, and cancelled almost all activities and sporting events.

A total of  1,125 votes were cast, with the COVID lockdown garnering 239 or about 21 per cent of those.

In second place is the story of Air Canada pulling out of North Bay, leaving airport in jeopardy

About 8 per cent of votes, or 93, voted the threat to our airport as the biggest story.

In third place is the Integrity commissioner investigating conflict of interest allegations involving the mayor and Invest North Bay.

About 8 per cent or 91 votes were cast for this story, which will come up again as the Integrity Commissioner will appear before Council later this year with suggestions for strengthening the City's Code of Conduct.

Council proceeding with a new arena at Omischl  with 80 votes or 7 per cent, and the condition and safety of our downtown with 66 votes 6 per cent, round out the top five.
