Council preview: Boat request approved after reconsideration

North Bay city council has approved a lease request from city restaurateur Jimmy Kolios to build a structure adjacent to The Boat, at the the waterfront.

Council had denied the request at a special meeting last Monday, but Coun. Daryl Vaillancourt had made a motion to have the matter reconsidered at last night's meeting.

Vaillancourt's motion passed and so did Kolios's request.

Kolios told council The Boat will not be run by Nipissing and Canadore students after all, and that he would put a request for proposals out for a new operator.

City council will discuss a motion by Coun. Mac Bain to give the North Bay Social Planning Council $20,000 to help it operate.

The Nipissing District Social Services Administration Board recently decided not to continue its funding of the planning council.

Council heard Monday night from representatives of several different organizations affiliated with the SPC, all of whom
asking that the city support it.

But budget chief Peter Chirico said he would like to see what measurable benefits the social planning council has produced.

The matter has been refered to the General Government Committee.

City council has passed a motion asking the province to amend the Occupiers Liability Act so that people who use public trail systems do so at their own risk, and that trail owners and volunteer organizations not be held liable for any damages arising from the use of trails by the public.
