Former Liberal leader Stéphane Dion joined Anthony Rota, Liberal candidate for Nipissing-Timiskaming, at an Environmental Town Hall Monday.

Liberal candidate Anthony Rota says the record Jay Aspin and the Conservative party on environmental issues is abysmal.

"Nationally lakes, rivers and streams are under attack as most have been removed from the Navigable Waters Protection Act at a time when fresh water is becoming one of the planet's scarcest resources," said Rota in a news release.

“Locally,  our Conservative Member of Parliament, Jay Aspin voted for removal of Trout Lake, Lake Temagami and the Mattawa River from the protection of the Act,” said Rota. “I am vehemently opposed to any pipeline that carries oil or diluted bitumen within the Trout Lake watershed.”

“We have to implement robust environmental regulations that are well thought out and that will apply to all projects of this nature,” said Rota. “The Liberal government will work collaboratively with the provinces, territories and industries to provide stronger environmental oversight and develop sustainable environmental policies that will benefit our children and grandchildren.”

Rota also said that under the Conservative watch, scientists and their work have been consistently muzzled in order to promote the interests of big oil.  Scientists report that global warming is causing a slowing of the Gulf Stream and the inevitable dramatic effect on growing seasons in Canada and elsewhere.
