Community unites in 'Mattawa Strong' video

'I love the analogy that even when we feel like we are only causing small ripples, in regard to the little ways we are helping each other... Those ripples always end up becoming the biggest waves'

A 28-year-old Mattawa woman says all the inspiration she needed to put together this Mattawa morale video project came from the "amazing people in this community coming together to support their loved ones, frontline and essential workers, and neighbours."

Jessica Papp cobbled together the different sequences using a simple movie editor but says she doesn't deserve all of the credit for the finished project.

"All I did was collect video and photo submissions by email or off Facebook," says Papp. She says she had to put the video on the shelf for a while to focus her energy and "to do my part in the community by collecting donations for the families who lost their belongings in the fire. It took me a bit longer before I had a chance to work on it again."

Besides her video-making skills, since moving to town eight years ago with her family, Sudbury native Papp says she is likely best known around Mattawa because she previously ran a daycare out of her home but now she keeps busy with three boys of her own.  Papp is a creative writer and currently a Social Service Worker student who also worked as a PSW at the Algonquin Nursing Home when she first moved to Mattawa.

Here is Jessica's message to go along with the new morale video for Mattawa:

"I just want to say I am truly honoured for how well received the second video was. Thank you to everyone who either reached out or commented directly on the post, showing your support for the compilation that I put together.

However, I want to make sure to share the credit as this project wouldn't have been as amazing without everyone who contributed in the community.

To begin, even though I could have a lengthy post and tag every individual person who went out of their way to open their hearts and get me the material I was looking for as I asked: I want to make sure two people, in general, share the spotlight with me.

Without Sheri Wabie and Dexture Sarrazin being a part of the amazing super team I have found myself in, none of this would have been made possible.

There are also so many incredible people who work behind the scenes, on the daily, who poured their love into this community way before COVID and that have done so without question even now.

I love the analogy that even when we feel like we are only causing small ripples, in regard to the little ways we are "helping" each other... Those ripples always end up becoming the biggest waves.🖤"
