College students take to the streets in North Bay for Cystic Fibrosis

"I care a lot about Cystic Fibrosis because my best friend died from it nine months ago. I miss her."

Bright orange t-shirts had college students high-viz in North Bay on Saturday for the fall fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis, Shinerama.

The campaign raises money to research for a cure for the fatal disease.

Canadore College students come all out for Shinerama. They volunteer to shine just about anything for coins for the cure.

Sharmarke Mohamed, the president of Canadore Students' Council said, "Shinerama is a long standing tradition here at Canadore.”

Emily Fenn is a student who volunteers because of the loss of her dear friend, Erin Cobean, to Cystic Fibrosis (CF). "I care a lot about Cystic Fibrosis because my best friend died from it nine months ago. I miss her. She would be 22 but died at 21.”

Fenn is a first year Canadore Nursing student. Her loss influenced her decision to become a nurse. "I've always wanted to go into nursing but Erin was definitely the main reason I actually pursued it."

Fenn explains why Erin had Cystic Fibrosis. “You are born with it. It is a genetic disorder in which the parents carry the gene for it.

I can definitely see a cure one day. It may have to do with a double lung transplant like my friend had a year before she passed away. There were a lot of medications. She would have to take over 30 pills a day. She would often be throwing up. It is a hard thing to go through.”

Fenn does find hope in the cause for the CF cure. “I've been doing a lot of volunteering for Cystic Fibrosis because of it.”

Opera Bakery donated scrumptious items to the Shinerama team at TD-Canada Trust Bank on Main St. to give out to the public as thanks for donations.

Luckily the students were able to finish up car washes before the sky opened up for a downpour rinse.

Last weekend, Shinerama students held a BBQ for Canadore employees raising $600. They hope to top last year’s efforts of raising under $5,000.  Help reach $5,000 and fund Cystic Fibrosis research and care here.
