North Bay Police Service
On Nov 9, North Bay Police responded to a fraud complaint involving Facebook.
Information was received from the complainant that a friend messaged her on Facebook advising that she was to receive $100,000 dollars from the Facebook creator David Myer as a Thank You for being a member. All she had to do was wait to be contacted by Myer and provide him with her personal information, name, address, date of birth, Telephone Number, e-mail address.
She was told she had to provide $1500.00 to a New York address and $1500.00 to a Nigeria address via Western Union and the $100,000.00 would be forwarded to her.
The complainant contacted her friend after sending the first instalment of money to New York. When speaking to her friend learned that her friends e-mail had been hacked and she never sent the original message.
The male is still continuing to contact the complainant in attempts to receive the second payment and has also phoned her several times.
The male’s picture on Facebook depicts him as a white, wealthy business man. The male who contacted the complainant had a Nigerian accent.
Several friends of the person whose Facebook was hacked were contacted by this same male; however they did not pay any money or supply personal information.
The North Bay Police wish to caution the public about this type of fraud. Never send money or personal information to anyone where you did not initiate the contact or request. If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Cst Ashley St John is investigating.
