City police officer charged with assault

The charge was laid in relation to an interaction with a prisoner in October, 2002.

Police say the officer allegedly struck the prisoner on the head area while he was handcuffed and in custody shortly after his arrest.

The victim, police said, did not receive serious injuries, and the officer in question also faces charges under the Code of Conduct of the Police Services Act of Ontario.

Three other police service officers, including a supervisor, have also been charged under the Police Services Act with offences related to the manner in which the alleged assault was subsequently report.

The officers remain on duty.

The information came to light as a result of an investigation instituted by the chief of police. There had not been a complaint by the victim.

The names of the officers involved will not be released.
