City coming up with arena concession solutions

'We have had a few tournament organizers ask if they can sell concession type items during tournaments at PP and WF and the answer is yes'

The City of North Bay is offering a hand to local hockey tournament organizers.

The city hosted the North Bay Challenge Cup 35-team tournament over the weekend but the problem was, right now there are no concessions open at either the Pete Palangio Arena or West Ferris Arena in North Bay.

Matt Duquette, Secretary with the North Bay Minor Hockey Association (formerly West Ferris Minor Hockey Assoc.) says the association got a lot of feedback over the lack of canteens at both arenas.

"Two years ago we explored the canteen at West Ferris Arena jointly with the Ringette Association and the City, however quickly realized we would require additional help to get this going," said Duquette in an email to BayToday.

"As both Associations lacked the volunteer base we could not proceed.  We are always looking for volunteers and would happily support any group looking to take this on.”

Melinda Fry, Manager of Sports and Events, has sent out an email to hockey tournament organizers in response to the concern.

"Access is to the lobby area at both arenas for the set up of a temp snack area for the tournaments," said Fry about the location.

"We have had a few tournament organizers ask if they can sell concession type items during tournaments at PP and WF and the answer is yes."

Fry says groups will be able to sell multiples items in the lobby location including:

  • hot and cold beverages
  • Fruit, muffins
  • Granola bars
  • Chips, chocolate bars
  • Candy

Fry says there will be no charge for doing this and it gives the organizations an opportunity to make some money during the event.

Mayor Al McDonald noted on social media when responding to arena concession complaints that no vendors came forward with a commitment to sign a contract to run the concessions this year at Pete Palangio Arena or West Ferris Arena.
