Chip-Chella raises over $2,500 for PADDLE

Great live music rocked the courtyard and both students and PADDLE loved the social experience

Friday, June 2nd proved that Raider spirit and community involvement is alive and well at Chippewa Intermediate and Secondary School.

Students from 7-12 and PADDLE participants enjoyed an afternoon filled with live music, ice cream sundaes, and flower crowns during the first annual "Chipp-Chella.”

This event was inspired by the world-famous music festival, Coachella.

This fundraising event was in support of the PADDLE Program, which is located at Chippewa. The mission of PADDLE is “to offer a structured, meaningful, inclusive and community-based environment where dependent adults with developmental disabilities can continue to thrive and grow socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually.”

The focus of the event was to raise funds and awareness for PADDLE, however, it was also to demonstrate how a community can thrive when it embraces a diverse population and ensures that accessible and equitable services are available to everyone – including young adults with special needs.

"The women and men of the PADDLE program are a part of Chippewa’s school community," says a news release from Ashley Gregoris, the English Studies and Arts Team Leader. "They interact with the student population during assemblies and in the halls on a daily basis. Their presence at Chippewa makes for an enriched educational experience for everyone.

The first ever Chipp-Chella was a great success enjoyed by participants of the PADDLE program, students, staff, and community members said Gregoris.

"Great live music rocked the courtyard and both students and PADDLE loved the social experience. Highlights of the afternoon included, dancing, singing, and much fun had by all. Those in attendance enjoyed musical performances by current and previous Chippewa students, including The Duke Street Turnaround Band, Jared Dorcas and a song by the PADDLE program."

Ticket sales for the event, merchandise, and special funding, donated by Telus, raised over $2,500.

All funds will be donated to the PADDLE program. The Chippewa Raiders are looking forward to making Chipp-Chella an annual event.
