UPDATED: Charges laid in May fire in Mattawa that displaced four families

Police have laid charges against a 25-year-old Mattawa man in relation to an early morning blaze last month at the Mattawan Apartments

Updated to include additional information from North Bay OPP

MATTAWA, Ont. — Police have laid charges against a 25-year-old Mattawa man in relation to an early morning blaze last month at the Mattawan Apartments.

As a result of the police investigation into the fire on Mattawan Street on May 13, Anthony SCAPPATURA was arrested and charged with:

  • Mischief Endangering Life 
  • Produce a Schedule II Substance 

OPP officers, the Mattawa Fire Department and an investigator from the Office of the Fire Marshall attended the scene to conduct an investigation that concluded the fire was initiated by a mishap in a drug manufacturing operation. Police confirm the accused sustained life-altering injuries in the fire.

The community rallied around the four Mattawa families displaced by the fire. Eleven people were displaced, five adults and six children.

The accused has been released on an undertaking and is scheduled to attend the Ontario Court of Justice in Mattawa on November 18.
