Change of heart. No casino protest for World Turtle Day

'Shutting the highway down wouldn't be beneficial to anyone'

The Save the Turtle, Stop the Casino group has changed its plans and will concentrate on education rather than protest on World Turtle Day May 23.

Spokesman Greg Gray told Baytoday, "On reflection, we realized that World Turtle Day is not a protest day."

The day was created as an annual observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.

The group had even considered shutting down Pinewood Park Drive, the site of the proposed casino.

"Shutting the highway down wouldn't be beneficial to anyone. There's an opportunity to protest some other day, but this is to highlight the turtle and the endangered species act and that's how we are going to keep it focused."

Instead, supporters will meet downtown in front of the Capitol Centre at noon. On Saturday at 10 at the turtle nesting site on LaVase River.

"On the 25th and 26th what we're hoping to do is have a provincial turtle walk," Gray explained. "The idea is we're setting up a Facebook page on endangered species and Blandings turtle's plight in this area. On those days we're hoping people from all across the province, when they go out for a nature walk, that they would take pictures of anything they come across and download it onto our Facebook page so we can analyze the data "

Gray says the group is looking to do a poll on whether people respect the endangered species act

On Saturday morning at 10 people will meet at the La Vase Portages Conservation Area off Highway 17 East

Gray says the Green Party has promised it will be heavily involved.

"They are very interested in the Endangered Species Act being changed."
