Canadore Social Service Worker students donated over $8,300 to the Gathering Place yesterday.

Over the fall semester, students worked together to organize multiple fundraising events for the soup kitchen, which serves prepared and nutritious meals to citizens in need. Events included raffles, a famine event, a fundraising dinner at Cecil’s Eatery and concert night at the Fox and Fiddle, bake sales, a bottle drive and a student theatre showcase.

“Working together to raise money to feed a community has left an unforgettable impression on all of us,” said Nicole Kernick, second year SSW student. “This experience opened my eyes to how much help is really needed in our city and I’m very proud to be making a difference.”

The Gathering Place is open Monday to Friday and serves approximately 135 people a day. The operation requires $250 a day in to provide these guests prepared meals. This donation covers the soup kitchen’s service costs for 33 days.

“We have a wonderful and long-standing relationship with Canadore,” said Jill Clark, Executive Director of the Gathering Place. “As always, this group of enthusiastic students was a joy to work alongside. They brought hope and excitement to our patrons and without community fundraisers like these, our organization truly could not keep its doors open.”

By the end of 2012, the community soup kitchen will have served 35,000 meals in 12 months. The Gathering Place relies solely on volunteers, private donors, sponsors and fundraisers to keep this service open. To learn more about how you can help, visit www.thegatheringplacenorthbay.org.
