OTTAWA - Yesterday, the Harper government announced they will no longer support the Own the Podium program which will see $11 million dollars of funding cuts to our Olympic athletes.

“This is a slap in the face to our athletes," said Carol Hughes, member of Parliament for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing.

“Our athletes need inspiration and support, especially while still competing at the Olympics," added Hughes.

Since the Prime Minister has prorogued government the ability to question the Conservative government on this and several other contentious issues has been limited

"If we need to re-examine how government funds athletes, we should ensure there is proper consultation through committee meetings," said Hughes.

“It would appear the government is trying to be strategic as to when they make certain announcements so that these can go unnoticed for the most part," said Hughes.

As Canadians focus their attention on the Olympic games, the Harper government is focussed on making critical announcements that will negatively impact our athletes when a majority of Canadians are preoccupied cheering our athletes on.

The government also ensured that when they prorogued Parliament it was at the time of year when Canadians were busy preparing for the Christmas holidays!
