Busy week for West Nipissing police

A post mortem was conducted and the individual’s death is attributed to smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious and the police involvement in the matter has concluded.

Between April 14th and April 22nd, the West Nipissing Police Service logged 171 calls for service. Among those were 25 police assistance calls, 10 9-1-1 calls, responded to 11 alarms, 4 thefts, 1 assaults, 3 motor vehicle collisions, 7 fraud complaints, 1 domestic dispute and 3 break and enters and 1 impaired driving.

On April 14th, police responded to a complaint of a break-enter and theft. The complainant is the owner of a second hand store and reported that items such as a washer, and old record player had been stolen from her storage area. Police are seeking witnesses and information related to this theft.

On April 16th police responded to a sudden death call in the Field area. Police conducted their investigation with the assistance of the coroner’s office. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation. Foul play is not suspected and the investigation into the matter is complete.

On April 16th police received a theft complaint from a Demers Street resident. The caller advised police that someone had entered her home and had stolen a mink collar from her coat along with other clothing items. Police are seeking the assistance of the public in solving this break-enter and theft.

At approximately 3:10 am on April 17th the West Nipissing Police Service received a complaint of a possible impaired driver. Officers on patrol located the vehicle proceeding east bound on HWY 17. The officer made observations of the vehicle swerving and conducted a traffic stop. The officer conducted his investigation and discovered the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverage and driving his motor vehicle. The man was arrested, he later provided suitable samples of his breath which were then analyzed and found to be over the legal limit. The driver now faces charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while having in excess of 80 milligram of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.

On April 18th the West Nipissing Police Service were advised that a fatal fire had taken place in the Wolseley Bay area. The West Nipissing Fire Service, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, the Coroner’s office and the police conducted a joint investigation. A post mortem was conducted and the individual’s death is attributed to smoke inhalation.  The cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious and the police involvement in the matter has concluded.

On April 19th police received a complaint from a Crystal Falls resident advising that his four-wheeler had been stolen. Police are currently investigating the theft and are on the lookout for a 2009 Yamaha Kodiak 450 black in color. The license plate that was affixed to the quad is 08ZY1.

On April 20th the West Nipissing Police Service assisted EMS with an unresponsive male complaint. Officers attended a Clark street residence at which time the male was treated and transported to the hospital by EMS. The police investigation revealed that the male had ingested medication and street drugs (Speed) which may have contributed to his condition. On April 21st the West Nipissing Police Service was informed that the 30 year old man had passed away. Police are cautioning people not to use medication that is not prescribed to you and that risks are always present when consuming street drugs.

On April 21st, the West Nipissing Police Service received a complaint regarding an adult male that may be a harm to himself. Police located the 33 year old man in a wooded area however he refused to exit. The police containment team was called to the scene and after a short period of time the man was taken into custody unharmed. The individual was transported to the hospital where he was provided medical attention.

Between April 5th and 21st, the West Nipissing Police Service received numerous fraud complaints. Most of the complaints were in relation to two scams taking place by telephone. The first involves individuals purporting to work for the Canada Revenue Agency and telling the victim that they owe money and if they don’t pay costly legal action will be commenced against them. The second scam involves individuals calling the victim and reporting that they can correct all the computer problems you are experiencing, if you provide them with your access codes they will take care of all the problems.  Both these types of unsolicited calls are scams. The Canada Revenue Agency will not call individuals for money and certainly won’t threaten legal action over the telephone. The suspects in the second scam want to take control of your computer so that they can gain access to your personal information. Please remember that these type of calls are scams and no information should be provided.
