Burton says very little about investigator's report at board meeting

'We will respond to the union after the board has had time to review and digest the report'

George Burton handed over the third party investigator's report to the Canadore College Board of Directors tonight (Tuesday) during their February meeting at the main campus.

The president of the post-secondary institution had very little to say to the media.

"As we stated, the report was received by the executive committee of the board, tonight it will go to the full board and after this evening, the board will respond in due course," said Burton.

"They will have some time to digest the contents of the report but beyond that, we are not going to make any further comment, as we said and we will stick to that course and that is the course that has been agreed to by the board."

It has been a long process since the controversial story broke just about a year ago this week.

Toronto lawyer Gillian Hnatiw said during an investigation the firm uncovered "over a dozen individuals who claim to have experienced similar types of career-limiting or ending discrimination or abuse while employed by Canadore" and were given the names of more than "two dozen" other individuals who endured similar experiences.

A third-party investigator was brought in to interview staff and employees about the situation. That investigator's report was released to Canadore College last week.

Smokey Thomas, the president of OPSEU, has spoken out about the situation recently and demanded Canadore to share a copy of the report with the union.

"We will respond to the union after the board has had time to review and digest the report," said Burton.

Thomas has demanded, in a letter to Canadore College's Board of Directors and President George Burton that "It's time to get serious about healing Canadore's workplace culture."

During Tuesday's interview, Burton continued to direct back to his statement when asked about the process; how this has impacted the reputation of the school, and whether or not the union will be supplied with a copy of the investigator's report.

Burton also would not comment on the length of the report.

"I am not going to comment on the length of the report," he said.

Burton would also not give any idea on a timeline as to how long the board will need to look over the report.

"We will comment on the report when we are ready."
