“The president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses has said the cuts in the North are the most severe."

Opposition leader Patrick Brown highlighted in Question Period today how Liberal cuts to health care have affected the quality of patient care in North Bay and across Northern Ontario.

In addition to a $54 million cut to health care in the most recent budget, and a $50 million cut to physiotherapy services for seniors, the Liberal government has slashed physician service fees by $800 million this year, Brown says in a news release.

“It’s bad enough what this government has done to these family doctors, but they’re also hurting entire regions,” said Brown. “The president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses has said the cuts in the North are the most severe. Across the region there are plenty of examples of how the cuts have hurt Northern families.”

Brown made reference to how North Bay Regional Health Centre was recently forced to cut almost 160 positions and close more than 30 beds due to a combination of lackluster provincial funding and burdensome red tape.

“Patient care will be compromised. Patients will have to wait. These doctors care about the patients in need. When will this Premier show the compassion doctors show their patients?” added Brown. “Stop the cuts to our health care system.”
